Definition: Barium x-rays are used to diagnose abnormalities of the digestive tract. Typically, in a “barium swallow,” the patient drinks a chalky liquid that contains barium, which coats the walls of the esophagus and stomach; this will allow their outlines to be revealed on x-rays. A radiologist can then see if there are strictures, ulcers, hiatal hernias, erosions or other abnormalities. Barium can be used to better evaluate the small intestines in a “barium swallow with small bowel follow-through” and can be used to assess the colon and rectum using a barium enema.
This test is not sensitive enough to be used as a reliable diagnostic test for GERD. It is used more often in patients who are experiencing difficulty with swallowing.
