Definition: A biopsy is the removal of a sample of tissue for purposes of diagnosis. For example, a sample of tissue is removed from an abnormal area for examination under a microscope. During a biopsy, the doctor will either remove a sample of tissue from the abnormal area or may remove the whole abnormal area or tumor. A pathologist then examines the tissue under a microscope.
