Question: What Are the Symptoms of GERD?
Answer: The four major symptoms of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease are:
  • Heartburn, which is an uncomfortable rising, burning sensation behind the breastbone.
  • Regurgitation of gastric acid or stomach contents into the mouth.
  • Difficult and/or painful swallowing.
  • Chest pain.

The most common manifestation of GERD is heartburn. Other GERD symptoms are regurgitation of gastric contents into the mouth, chest pain and difficulty swallowing. Some GERD sufferers experience pulmonary manifestations, such as asthma, coughing, wheezing and vocal cord inflammation, which causes hoarseness.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
While chest pain can be caused by acid reflux, it can also indicate serious cardiac disease. Anytime you experience chest pain, it should always be evaluated by a physician.
