New Study Links Bad Breath to Heartburn, GERD

Monday November 13, 2006
A recent study suggests a connection between proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) used for the treatment of chronic heartburn and GERD is linked to bad breath (halitosis).

Doctors at UNIFESP in Sao Paulo, Brazil, examined 23 adult patients with GERD and 17 adult patients with dyspepsia (indigestion) to see if there is a connection between halitosis and GERD. The results showed that 39 percent of the GERD patients suffered from halitosis and that treatment with a PPI was deemed a factor in at least 75 percent of the cases. Dyspepsia did not seem to be a leading cause of halitosis, with just 18 percent of the dyspepsia patients suffering from bad breath.

Dr. Luciana Camacho-Lobato, Ph.D of UNIFESP, stated, “Once we excluded oral causes of halitosis, we discovered that bacteria overgrowth associated with PPI usage might play a role in causing bad breath.”

Dear ,

I have small acid reflection from stomach , Doctor said : acid reach to mouth and back of tongue in small quantity but it is enough to make such area in Acidic (acid) atmosphere which should be alkaline , the bacteria in that area are acting differently in acidic environment causing halitosis.

Please be noticed that my mouth and tongue and all ENT area are in a good health , the problem comes from stomach acid reflection.

Are there any product in alkaline solution form , In case it is acidic solution , do you think that will solve such problem ??
Are there any new research about the relation between stomach acid reflection and halitosis

Please advice in case you have solution
Or please advice where to go ?

Thank You for help in advance
Best Regards
