A totally natural remedy to relieve heartburn

Monday September 1, 2003
Would you like to use a natural remedy to relieve your heartburn? What could be more natural than a normal function of your own body?

Saliva!

That's right. If you stimulate saliva production by chewing gum or sucking on a lozenge, the saliva can relieve heartburn. Your saliva bathes the esophagus and lessens the effects of acid that has refluxed up from the stomach. For example, chewing sugarless gum for 30 minutes after meals stimulates saliva and eases acid reflux.

does it have to be sugarless gum? I like big red brand cinammon gum. Would this be ok?

Cinnamon is not something you want to chew. Cinnamon caused my GERD to act up.

I have GERD and when it is acting up, it can involve your brochial tubes (breathing). GERD can cause your brochial tubes and around the lungs to inflame giving you the sensation of not being able to breathe. I know this because it has happened to me. You don’t have to have the immediate burning sensation that comes with GERD before it starts way down to involve your bronchial tubes. Take your meds and feel your breathing ease up.
