Just as at home, eating certain foods in restaurants can trigger heartburn. Knowing what to avoid can lead to a more enjoyable dining experience.

  1. Avoid fried foods, such as burgers, fried chicken, fried fish

  2. Avoid sandwich melts

  3. Avoid foods prepared in butter or oil

  4. Avoid high-fat side dishes, such as French fries

  5. Avoid high-fat sauces, salad dressings, gravies, mayonnaise

  6. Avoid creamy soups

  7. Avoid chili

  8. Avoid peppers

  9. Avoid onions

  10. Avoid foods with a lot of extra cheese

  11. Avoid tomato-based foods, including catsup

  12. Avoid citrus fruits and drinks such as oranges, orange juice and lemonade

  13. Avoid caffeninated beverages such as coffee, tea, iced tea and cola

  14. Avoid alcoholic beverages

  15. Avoid chocolate
