Tuna Melts

Fat can be a heartburn trigger for some people. Tuna, when packed in water instead of oil, is low-fat. This recipe also calls for low-fat or fat-free ingredients, making it a safe choice for heartburn sufferers.

Total Time: 15 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 2-6 oz cans water-packed tuna
  • 4 tbsp low-fat or fat-free mayonnaise
  • 4 tbsp chopped celery
  • 8 slices whole wheat bread (can substitute with your favorite)
  • 1 cup low-fat or fat-free shredded cheddar cheese

Preparation:

  • Combine tuna, mayonnaise, and celery in a bowl, then set aside
  • Place slices of bread on a cookie sheet, and broil in oven until just golden brown, usually 2 to 3 minutes. Remove from oven
  • Turn bread slices over, and top each slice with 1/8 of the tuna mixture
  • Sprinkle shredded cheddar on each slice of bread and tuna
  • Broil in oven for 2 to 4 minutes, or until the cheese melts
