Definition:

Anticholinergics are compounds that block the actions of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine in the central and peripheral nervous system, which can have a relaxing effect on muscles. They are sometimes used to control spasms in smooth muscles, such as in the intestine. They have also been used as bronchodilators to relax the muscles of the bronchial tubes and allow them to expand.

For some patients, taking this type of medication may cause heartburn.
