Question: Can antacid tablets and other over-the-counter remedies help ease heartburn?
Answer: Yes. There are antacids and acid blockers (also called H2 blockers) available over the counter. The acid blockers inhibit the release of acid, take about an hour to work and are taken before you eat. They will last about 9 to 12 hours. Ask your doctor about acid blocker medications as they can cause side effects or drug interactions. If you already have indigestion, an antacid can give you fast, short-term relief. The antacids neutralize acid in the stomach and esophagus, are fast-acting, and last about 1 to 2 hours. Important Note: If you are experiencing long-term or frequent heartburn, you should see your doctor. The use of over-the-counter medications may mask a more serious condition.
