The acid blockers inhibit the release of acid, take about an hour to work and are taken before you eat. They will last about 9 to 12 hours. Ask your doctor about acid blocker medications as they can cause side effects or drug interactions. If you already have indigestion, an antacid can give you fast, short-term relief. The antacids neutralize acid in the stomach and esophagus, are fast-acting, and last about 1 to 2 hours.
