Linda's Story

Monday March 26, 2007
"I was diagnosed with a esophageal motility disorder about 15 years ago. Symptoms began after a routine endoscopy to check for an ulcer. The feeling of bloatedness and the urgency to burp. When trying to burp, I simply could not and it feels like I am going to explode. I was subjected to every test possible and it was determined that I have a motility disorder. I take reglan 2x a day and 40 mg of nexium per day. I have grown, over the years, able to live with it. It has never gone away, but the symptoms are not constant anymore, but they are still there. The only relief I ever get when I have a symptom is to enjoy a deep burp."

Points to Remember:
Intestinal walls consist of layers of muscles. In normal conditions, these muscles contract and relax in a coordinated, rhythmic fashion that propels food from the esophagus to the stomach, and through the intestine to the anus. But in the presence of a motility disorder, these contractions don't occur in a coordinated fashion. This results in food not passing through the intestine properly. A doctor may prescribe a promotility agent, such as Reglan, and may also prescribe a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) in conjunction with the promotility agent to treat any acid reflux symptoms that may occur because of the slowed digestion.
