Hi! I know most people with GERD suffer from night time heart burn. My problem is mainly when I am awake either sitting or standing.
If I do have heart burn when I go to bed (most of the time), it goes away soon after lying down. I wake up in the morining with NO heart burn at all. I take Nexium in the morning about one hour before I get up. I ususally have to take 4 Gaviscon before going to bed due to the fact that if I don’t eat at least 2 hrs before bedtime, I will wind up with heart burn anyway, so I would rather not go to bed on an empty stomach.
About the only time I don’t have to worry about getting heart burn is when I am asleep. When I get my night time heat burn, I also get a cough which also disappears when my heart burn is gone.

Hi Kathy,
My mom is suffering from the same symptoms as you described, experiencing heartburn only during the daytime and relief once she lies down at night. No issues through the night. The burn starts in shortly after she’s up in the morning and increases throughout the day. Her doctor is stumped, and you are the only other person I have found with this unique experience. Have you learned anything more since January as to what the cause is or suggestions for relief? Many thanks.
