GERD Awareness Week - November 18-24

Monday November 19, 2007
This week marks the 9th Annual GERD Awareness Week. During this week (and at any time during the year) individuals experiencing GERD symptoms are encouraged to see their doctor. It is also a time to get information and support in connection with GERD.

What you should know about GERD:

  • Symptoms of GERD
Gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, occurs when the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) does not close properly and stomach contents reflux back up into the esophagus. Knowing the symptoms can help you receive a diagnosis and treatment sooner.

  • Diagnostic Tests for GERD
Heartburn that occurs repeatedly should be evaluated by a doctor to determine what's causing the problem. There are specific diagnostic tests the doctor will use to determine if your heartburn is something more serious, such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

  • Treating GERD
Depending on how severe your GERD is, treatment may involve one or more of the following lifestyle changes and medications or surgery. Learn what these options are.

  • Complication of Long-term GERD
If gastroesophageal reflux disease is not treated effectively, the constant acid reflux can irritate the lining of hte esophagus, and serious complications can occur.
