During the first couple months of my grandson's life, he had what appeared to be typical episodes of spitting up that many infants experience. As he drew older, however, the spitting up grew worse. When my grandson was about six months old, he was diagnosed with gastroesophageal reflux.

Spitting up is common in infants. This type of gastric reflux occurs during the first three months of age in more than half of all infants. However, for a small number of babies, it isn't simple spitting up. For these babies, their symptoms of reflux are severe and require medical attention.
