Makers of heartburn drug Propulsid appeal $48.5M award

The Supreme Court of Mississippi listened to arguments Tuesday in an appeal of a $48.5 million damage award imposed on Janssen Pharmaceutica Inc., the makers of the heartburn drug Propulsid. Janssen Pharmaceutica Inc., and its parent company Johnson & Johnson, are asking that the case be dismissed. 10 plaintiffs involved in the lawsuit have said taking Propulsid caused their heart problems, anxiety attacks and other conditions. In 2000, the FDA issued a warning stating Propulsid could cause irregular heartbeats and sudden death.
