FDA Approves Vision Sciences' Nasal Endoscope

By , About.com GuideAugust 8, 2003

This endoscope is narrow in diameter to allow insertion transnasally (through the patient's nose). Endoscopes used up to this date have been inserted through a patient's mouth.

They believe that patients suffering from GERD may benefit from transnasal esophagoscopy (TNE), as it can reveal effects of GERD on the throat and esophagus. These effects, which are far more common than previously realized, may increase patients’ risks for cancer of the larynx and hypopharynx. Previously known effects of GERD are conditions such as Barrett's Esophagus.
